Baptized

By Alyssia McCloud

the waters open up

they beg for my body

my fingers

my legs

my skin

my hair

they plea

to wash me over

to bury me beneath their fullness

to collapse over my flesh

they want me baptized

to shed my old body

to die to my obsessions

to sacrifice my trauma

to let rest my former self and all things that

trapped me

they want me to emerge

to be reintroduced to life

to scent

to touch

to sight

to sound

they want me to

taste and see

life as it is

God as He is

and that because of One

both are consistently

good

they want me to drip

in the happiness that is present

in this day

at this hour

to be refreshed

with healing currents

to be freed from the former

and to embrace

the now

the waters want

for me to be free

in this way

we are the same
